Ongoing Projects

Sustainability

  • Farm

    • Land
With the 15 acres of already acquired land Musana benefits financially and nutritionally from agriculture. Musana Farm Project currently grows fruits, vegetables, maiz, beans, rice, and animal feeds that have significantly reduced food costs through dietary supplementation and income-generating crop yields.
    • Livestock
      • Musana has four dairy cows that produce 20-30 liters of milk a day. This milk is given to the children to balance their diet and provide them with the dairy that their bodies are lacking.
      • Musana has 160 hens that provide the children with 125-150 eggs a day. These eggs provide protein, which is essential in the development of children. When there is an excess of eggs, the surplus is sold to local businesses for a profit.
      • Musana has fishponds that hold up to 6,000 tilapia and catfish. The fish will be sold in the local market and the proceeds will go directly back into the home and school.
  • Restaurant in Town

    • Musana has a restaurant located in the center of Iganga Town called Sol Cafe. It is a social gathering place for locals and volunteers and the food is outstanding and becoming a favorite in town. All of the profits go to Musana and the kids are learning vital business and customer service skills.
    • Currently the café generates on average $50 per weekday and $100 a on weekends. Within one year, after all initial start up costs are paid, the restaurant will generate $1,800 monthly, and $21, 600 annually, which is 22.3% of our total Musana operating budget.
  • Craft Department

30 women from local villages gather a few times a week to make jewelry and bags. These women are paid for their work, which gives them an income that they are able to use to provide for their families. The crafts they make are then sold in town or in America and all the proceeds go back into Musana's home and school. Purchase these crafts at shop.musana.org
